I tried to setup using a smart phone with Andriod operating system and it did not work. So I tried my tablet and it worked, So give it a try, either it will work or not! What ever you use to setup you will need to use to control you system. There is a setup to link your TV remote so you can use it to control the sound. But to access the internet music services you will need to access your ipad.

As long as you install the Sonos app on your tablet and have wifi, you won't need a phone.

Yes the app is available for the ipad. I have it set up on mine ipad mini and have set up 2 pairs of Play1 speakers with the ipad app.
