“The shooting ranges for pistols and long guns, has tremendous loud noises and concussion type noises. I have an early pair of the Sony noise cancelling over the ear headphones and they are useless. My question is if the new Sony WH1000xm2.. would work?”

ANC is useless at the firing range and always will be. They are just not built for that.

The noise canceling function is effective in low-frequency ranges such as airplanes, trains, offices, and in near air conditioning. Please try again later.I honestly cannot say for sure about the gun noise if you are the one shooting as I don't have that experience yet BUT Can say that they pretty much cancelled out the noise of the "Directly Overhead" Low Flying B-52 Bombers that fly over my house every day. I live across the street from the base...At the same time, I was cranking up my music at a good volume with these headphones during that experience. I hope that may help some.
