I believe it can. The Sony tvs, and most tvs on the market, should have the software and codecs for a variety of media format play (ie mp3, mp4, divx, avi) from a thumb drive or external drive. I could play media from a thumb drive or external drive 10 plus years ago. This shouldn't be an issue. Once your connect your drive to the USB on the tv, the tv ought to automatically ask the user what they'd like to do. Open the USB device or Folder, select the media file and play. Because Sony tv models have Android OS, you can also go to the Google Play Store and download an app to play your media, such as the VLC Media Player, if you prefer the interface of a particular app to whatever software is present on the Sony tv.

You can use an external hard disk drive (HDD) as long as it meets the specifications for use on your Android TV™️ device. We can't guarantee operation with all HDDs.
