Hi JG,

To fully enjoy theater-like multi-channel surround sound, you need five speakers (two front
speakers, a center speaker, and two surround speakers) and a subwoofer. The AV receiver doesn't have a zone function so you cannot connect outside speakers. If you want that function, we recommend STR-DN1080.

I wouldn’t plan on using it that way but you can. You’d have to use the equalizer to tune it and compromise how you use your interior speakers if you inter to use it as a surround sound system too.
