“Can you use this as an AM/FM radio outdoors where there are no plugins since it has a battery-operated feature? This is advertised as a battery-back up product. I want to know if you can just run it off the batteries outside to listen to the radio when you don't need the alarm.”

No, the batteries are for just retaining your settings in the event the power goes off.
