It does not support the newer Ultra HD Blu-ray (4K UHD) disc format, which requires a specific UHD-compatible drive and decoding hardware. Some Sony models in higher series (like the BDP-S6500 and BDP-S6700) can upscale standard Blu-ray and DVD content to near-4K resolution when connected to a 4K TV, but they also do not support actual 4K UHD disc playback. The BDP-S1700U is designed to play DVDs and Blu-ray discs; however, it will not recognize or play 4K Ultra HD discs. This model is capable of upscaling standard definition DVDs to near HD resolution and can play Blu-ray movies in Full High Definition quality. If 4K playback is a requirement for you, you might consider the following models: - UBP-X700 - UBP-X800 - UBP-X800M2 - UBP-X1000ES These models are equipped to play UHD Blu-ray discs and output native 4K video. However, unlike some older players that use a standard 'plug-and-go' cable, this model uses an external AC Power Adapter (similar to a laptop charger).
