Yes, the Sony BDP-S1700U Blu-ray player can be used with just the HDMI cable alone.

The HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) standard is designed to transmit both high-quality digital video and multi-channel digital audio through a single cable.

As long as you connect the HDMI cable from the player to an HDMI input on your TV (or sound system), you do not need to connect a separate audio cable. The sound will be carried over the HDMI cable along with the picture.
