  • QuestionDoes it play 4k ultra disc and dvd

    Asked by Anonymous.

    • Answer Hi there, thanks for asking! The BDPS1700U does not support playback of 4K Ultra HD (UHD) Blu-ray discs. This model is a standard Blu-ray player, which means: It can play standard Blu-ray discs, regular DVDs, and CDs. It does not support the newer Ultra HD Blu-ray (4K UHD) disc format, which requires a specific UHD-compatible drive and decoding hardware. Some Sony models in higher series (like the BDP-S6500 and BDP-S6700) can upscale standard Blu-ray and DVD content to near-4K resolution when connected to a 4K TV, but they also do not support actual 4K UHD disc playback. The BDP-S1700U is designed to play DVDs and Blu-ray discs; however, it will not recognize or play 4K Ultra HD discs. This model is capable of upscaling standard definition DVDs to near HD resolution and can play Blu-ray movies in Full High Definition quality. If 4K playback is a requirement for you, you might consider the following models: - UBP-X700 - UBP-X800 - UBP-X800M2 - UBP-X1000ES These models are equipped to play UHD Blu-ray discs and output native 4K video. It is important to note that earlier models, such as the BDPS6700, are labeled as "4K upscaling models" and cannot play UHD discs, similar to the BDPS1700U, which can upscale to HD but does not support 4K playback. • QuestionDoes this DVD player work with just the hdmi cable? Or do you need to hook up the audio cable?

    Asked by Elaine.

    • Answer Hi Elaine, Yes, the Sony BDP-S1700U Blu-ray player can be used with just the HDMI cable alone. The HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) standard is designed to transmit both high-quality digital video and multi-channel digital audio through a single cable. As long as you connect the HDMI cable from the player to an HDMI input on your TV (or sound system), you do not need to connect a separate audio cable. The sound will be carried over the HDMI cable along with the picture. Thank you for considering Sony products! Regards, Dominick

    • Answer Hi Dee65, Yes, the Sony BDP-S1700U is a special bundle that includes a high-speed HDMI cable in the box to ensure you have everything needed for an immediate setup. Thanks for choosing Sony.  Best regards, Eliab

    Asked by D.

    • Answer No, this player only plays DVDs from region one.

      Answered by DeborahG

  • QuestionIs it region free?

    Asked by Anonymous.

    • Answer Hello Anonymous, Thank you for considering Sony products! We appreciate your inquiry and are happy to assist. The Sony BDPS1700U Blu-ray player is not region-free or multi-region. It is designed to play Blu-ray and DVD discs that are labeled with the compatible region code. Each unit has a region code printed on its back, limiting playback to discs with the same region code. This means that if a Blu-ray or DVD is from a different region, the player won't be able to play it. For more comprehensive information about region codes for Blu-ray discs, please refer to the following article: https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/articles/00029369. It's important to note that Sony doesn't manufacture or sell region-free or multi-region players. Any modifications made to enable such capabilities could void the warranty. Best regards, -Fred

  • QuestionCan this unit play PAL DVDs on NTSC TV?

    Asked by Mike.

    • Answer Hi Mike, The BDP-S1700U sold in the North American market is designed to support the NTSC broadcast system and is coded for Region 1 DVDs and Region A Blu-rays. Sony does not officially support the playback of PAL-formatted discs on this NTSC model, nor does the standard firmware include an internal PAL-to-NTSC signal converter for playback on standard U.S. televisions. For guaranteed compatibility, we recommend using discs that match the region and color system of your player and TV. Thanks for choosing Sony. Best regards, Eliab

  • Questiondoes it play sacd

    Asked by vanfass.

    • Answer Hi Vanfass Thank you for reaching out to us with your question. Regarding the BDP-S1700U, this model does not support SACD (Super Audio CD) playback. While it is a versatile player for high-definition Blu-ray Discs, DVDs, and standard Music CDs (CD-DA), it does not have the specific laser or decoding hardware required for the SACD format. If SACD playback is a priority for your audio setup, we recommend taking a look at the Sony UBP-X700U which is designed to support high-resolution audio formats including SACD. We hope you find this information helpful, and thanks for considering Sony! Regards, Dominick

  • QuestionIs this region free? Can I play region B?

    Asked by Lucy.

    • Answer Hi Lucy! The Sony BDP-S1700U is not region-free. Our players are manufactured with specific region codes to ensure compatibility within designated geographic zones. Units purchased in the U.S. and Canada are classified as Region A and are designed to play Blu-ray discs coded for North America, South America, Japan, and parts of Southeast Asia. Because this model is locked to Region A, it will not be able to play Region B discs, which are typically sold in Europe, Africa, and Australia. We hope this clarifies things for you, and thank you for considering Sony! Best regards, Dominick

  • QuestionDoes item come with protective case, or is one available model:BDPS1700U

    Asked by Buck.

    • Answer Thank you for contacting Sony, Buck. The BDP-S1700U does not come with a protective carrying case, as it is designed primarily as a stationary home theater component. While Sony does not manufacture a specific travel case for this model, third-party dust covers may be available from various retailers if you are looking to protect the unit from dust while not in use. In the box, you’ll find the Blu-ray player, a remote control (with batteries), and the AC power adapter. We hope this helps! We appreciate your interest in Sony products. Asked by Elaine.

    • Answer Hi Elaine, While we cannot confirm compatibility with third-party devices such as TCL Roku TVs, the remote for the BDP-S1700 is primarily designed to control the player and Sony brand televisions. • Questioni want to buy a blu ray player that I can plug into my mac computer and play blu ray 4K without any additional software. What do you recommend?

    Asked by Roberto.

    • Answer Thank you for contacting Sony, Roberto. We appreciate your interest, but unfortunately, you cannot plug a standalone Sony Blu-ray player into a Mac to play movies. Our players, like the BDP-S1700U, are designed to connect directly to a TV via HDMI. Additionally, the BDP-S1700U is a standard HD player and is not compatible with 4K Ultra HD discs. For the best 4K experience, we recommend using a player like our UBP-X700 connected directly to a 4K TV. We appreciate your interest in Sony products. • QuestionIs there a way to loop a DVD on this device? I am looking to run the same DVD all day for my business. When the video finishes, I would like to have it restart automatically, can this machine do this?

    Asked by MaryAnn.

    • Answer Hi Reginleif, We appreciate your interest in the BDP-S1700 for your business needs! You can certainly loop a DVD by using the Repeat function found under the Options menu during playback, which allows the player to automatically restart the title or chapter indefinitely. For a seamless all-day display, we also recommend adjusting the "Auto Standby" setting to ensure the player remains active as long as you need it. Thanks for choosing Sony.  Best regards, Eliab

  • QuestionWill it play region B blue rays?

    Asked by Anonymous.

    • Answer Thank you for contacting Sony. By default, Sony Blu-ray players sold in the United States are coded for Region A discs and Region 1 DVDs. This means the BDP-S1700U will not play standard Region B Blu-rays, which are typically intended for Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. However, it will play any "Region Free" or "All Region" discs regardless of where they were purchased. If your movies specifically have the Region B logo on the back, they unfortunately won't be compatible with this model. We appreciate your interest in Sony products. • QuestionDOES THIS PLAYER HAVE WI FI WIRELESS CAPABILITY? SONY BDPS1700U BLU-RAY PLAYER.

    Asked by GG.

    • Answer Hi GG, Thank you for your question! No, the BDP-S1700U does not have Wi-Fi or wireless networking capabilities. This model is designed with a "Wired-Only" connection via the Ethernet port on the back of the device. This connection is used specifically for: - Downloading necessary system firmware updates. - Accessing BD-Live content (extra features found on certain Blu-ray discs). If you require a Blu-ray player with built-in Wi-Fi for wireless streaming and updates, we recommend looking at our UBPX700M or UBPX800M2 models, which both support wireless connectivity.
