Some Sony models in higher series (like the BDP-S6500 and BDP-S6700) can upscale standard Blu-ray and DVD content to near-4K resolution when connected to a 4K TV, but they also do not support actual 4K UHD disc playback. The BDP-S1700U is designed to play DVDs and Blu-ray discs; however, it will not recognize or play 4K Ultra HD discs. This model is capable of upscaling standard definition DVDs to near HD resolution and can play Blu-ray movies in Full High Definition quality.
