Q: Does the unit play 4k mkv files or any mkv files at all off a USB drive?
A: Yes, the UB820 will play 4K HDR MKVs from an external hard drive (It has to be plugged into the rear USB input) but it will not play any of the lossless audio tracks. These include DolbyTrue HD, DTSMA-HD and Dolby Atmos. It will play lossy audio tracks (Dolby Digital 5.1/7.1 or DTS 5.1/7.1). The UB820 will also not recognize chapter marks in any MKV files. Despite these "shortcomings", as a pure disc player, the 820 now stands at the top of the mountain. I have a still brilliant Oppo-203 and from a pure video standpoint, the 820 now edges it out.
A: Yes. It will auto play a DV encoded disc in DV but only if you have DV turned ON in the player settings. If DV is set to OFF, it will play the disc in HDR.

I felt compelled to write a review of this marvelous player. It blows away my previous player, the Sony X800. Though that is a very solid player, the PQ isn't as good and the sound isn't as good either, and no DV (dolby vision). The X800 has a better build quality with more metal but that's where it stops. After hooking up this player, I threw in Baby Driver, which the first chase scene with his red car looks and sounds reference. I've also watched The Office on blu-ray and the upscaling on this player is second to none. It upscales blu-rays and makes them really look close to 4K. Next we watched Prisoners and having seen this movie several times on blu-ray, it was easily the most detailed and crisp it has ever looked. The network streaming is also right on track. I have the Simpsons and Seinfeld ripped to my network hard drive (don't worry I own the discs) and both look great. Now it's standard definition but the network interface is nice and works just fine. I would recommend this to anyone willing to spend a little extra to get the best audio and picture quality for your 4K set. I have a TCL 55" that does DV and it just looks so sharp with this player. It also upscales beautifully. Highly recommended!!

At first I didnt really see much difference between this and my Sony x700. I mean, both do look amazing and I recommend that one if you dont wanna spend this much on a player. The best is that it auto switches to Dolby Vision. The x700 made you manually turn it on and off. Sometimes I couldnt find details on the disc packaging to let me know if it even had dolby vision. If it does, you wanna watch it that way. Of you dont care about DV or your tv doesnt have that feature it's no big deal to you. The UB820 has this awesome HDR button that allows you to brighten the HDR more if youd like. It has like 4 settings. Now, you're probably thinking that's something you can just adjust on your tv. It's not. I tried to do that and mimic thos feature bit no settings are the same and if they are it's way too many different adjustments compared to one button push. This HDR button also works on streaming 4k sites like Amazon and Netflix. You can also change the wallpaper on your homescreen which is cool. I have a Halloween one on mine right now. I do wish the image of the movie appeared when a disc was in. My Samsung player does that and I love it. Shows a picture or mini poster of the movie. The bad is really just that it doesnt have many apps. It's a shame too because I think it would make this player stand out more. I use the built in apps or firestick most of the time bit then I cant use the HDR button. Also I wish it had an input to run something else thru it. Great player and the price is a little higher than I'd normally go bit if you're ok with it you shouldn't be disappointed. And yes, I still do use that HD-DVD player in the picture.

I bought the Sony UBP-700XM and it would skip or freeze on many 4K Blu-Ray's I owned, even new ones! I returned it and found this at Best Buy so I picked it up and all I can say is WOW. Picture is amazing, colors are more vivid than on the Sony, and it played every movie I had FLAWLESSLY. Highly recommend and it's worth checking out open box deals at Best Buy. They're one of the few retailers I trust buying open box from!
