Roku Sticks & Streaming Devices

If you are choosing between a smart TV and a streaming device that pairs with a traditional TV, the biggest factor will likely be cost. A Roku Smart TV will connect directly to the internet with no need for additional streaming hardware, but it can be a pricey investment.

Alternatively, if you want to stream media to your traditional television, the easiest method is to hook up a streaming device like a Roku stick. A streaming player connects to the internet so that it can access your streaming accounts, such as Netflix, Amazon and Hulu, and it plugs into your television just like many other media players.

It is worth thinking about the type of internet connection you want when shopping for a streaming device. Smaller devices, like the Roku stick, connect via Wi-Fi, while larger ones can support a wired connection, such as Ethernet. Using a wired internet connection can be more stable and allow for higher resolutions when streaming content, but Wi-Fi streaming devices offer great convenience.

Your Roku player will plug into your television via an HDMI port. The Roku stick plugs in directly while larger Roku streaming players will need an HDMI cable. If you want a streaming device with a wired internet connection, you will also need an Ethernet cable that plugs into your wireless router. For wireless connections, you may want a Wi-Fi extender to strengthen the Wi-Fi signal near your entertainment center.

When you get your new Roku Smart TV or Roku streaming device, you will set up a Roku profile that connects to all of the streaming services you use. You can update this account as needed, such as when you change a password or add a new streaming channel to your collection. You can usually choose to do this through your TV with your Roku remote or via Roku’s website.

If you’re deciding on the best streaming device for you, think about the capabilities you would like to have. For instance, if you have a 4K TV, you probably want a Roku 4K streaming player.
