Equipping your car with a power inverter

What is an inverter?

What is a power inverter? It’s a device that makes it possible to harness the electricity from your car battery by changing the car’s DC current into AC current to support electronics—like laptop computers and tablets.

Most inverters will provide one or more electrical outlets into which you can plug your devices, making the inverter a greater device if you spend much of the day in your car or are taking a road trip. Even in an RV with electrical outlets, an RV power inverter can help you power up electronics when you aren’t running a generator or plugged into a power hookup at a campground. It works instead while your engine is running.

If you have a lot of electrical devices and equipment to keep charged, you might consider adding additional power solutions, such as a portable power bank or a solar generator.

Getting the most out of your inverter

To make the most of your 12V inverter, start by choosing the right power inverter for your car or truck. First, determine the wattage you need. Most computers, cellphones, and tablets only need an inverter of 400 watts or less, but motorized equipment (like outdoor power equipment) requires a higher wattage.

Additionally, look at voltage requirements. Many inverters connect to the 12V outlet (sometimes called the DC accessory port or the cigarette lighter) in your car or truck. Higher-wattage inverters, however, need more than 12 volts to run. These power inverters usually run directly off a car or truck battery or fuse panel. Make sure to run the engine of your vehicle at least intermittently to ensure the battery recharges before being drained.

If you are also considering the benefits of a generator to run outdoor equipment or power your vacations, find out more about the differences between an inverter and a generator.
