If you connect your DVD to to your TV with an HDMI cable, it should play in 5.1 surround as long as your TV is correctly connected to your surround sound system.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.This DVD player does not have jacks to connect directly to a set of 5.1 speakers. What it has though, would be digital audio output jacks (HDMI OUT and DIGITAL COAXIAL OUTPUT) capable of sending the 5.1 channel audio (provided your content carries such audio signal). So yes it has to go through a receiver.
