• There's nothing specific or special to my knowledge about this Sony DVD player, and it works great with my sisters 50 inch Samsung 4K Smart TV. It was $49, so no I don't think you need a special type DVD player.

• A regular DVD player can be attached to a 4k UHD TV. If you purchase any 4k DVD's, you will need to purchase a DVD player supporting 4k formatted DVD's.
