“How did this go from "Available Soon" to "Sold Out" without ever being "Available"??? Something seems fishy to me...”

It was released a day early and there were massive computer problems. If you were persistent and spent several hours hitting refresh it was possible to put it in your cart. Then you had to spend several hours hitting refresh to pay for it. Atleast that was how I got mine. Some stores offer notification when the next systems are going to be released, but it is short notice and you need to act very fast.
