I can’t speak to other speakers. This speaker is Bluetooth. If you laptop has Bluetooth capabilities, it would be able to connect. I have only used my speaker with an IPad or IPhone for teleconferences or online training.

However, I see your reason why you couldn't connect to a computer via USB. Ireally like it has really good salads for its size and have noted no audio distortion.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.With this being a Bluetooth speaker, you don't need to "plug it in". You would need to turn on the Bluetooth on your computer, pair it to the speaker and then in your settings, select this speaker as an output and away you go. It would sound better than speakers inside your computer because of the quality of these Sony speakers compared to the basic ones included with the computer. Just know that there is not a microphone on the unit, so you would need to use the microphone on your computer or get a standalone mic. Background noise is not a question of the speaker you have, but rather the noise happening on the other end that your friend's microphone is picking up. But this speaker will enhance the quality of the audio of Skype Calls.
