I gave this as a gift so I have no idea about voice activation

This model is not voice activated. After turning it on, you have to press record in order to capture any audio (it will beep), then stop to end the recording or the record button to pause/resume recording in the same file (it will beep again when you end/pause the recording).

I have bought these Sony recorders for years and own about a dozen of them. I have always had to push a record button. Personally, I would never want a recorder to begin recording until I say so.
