• Sure, why not? Dolby ATMOS will play through this unit to your receiver through the hdmi output.

• Why would you play Dolby ATMOS samples from an external hard drive through this player? There is a USB port on the front panel. I'm assuming that your receiver already handles ATMOS. When you play a 4K Blu-Ray DVD, the initial menu asks if you want to play the movie in ATMOS or DTS-HD mode. I would just run the external hard drive w/ATMOS samples directly into another HDMI input on your receiver. My only complaint (Attention: SONY) is that I'd like to see a little ATMOS light on the front panel display when an ATMOS source is selected.
