Hi Mel, for the best read speed (transfer speed) to the computer it is recommended to use the UHS-II reader with UHS-II cards. However, the card is backward compatible so it will still read and transfer data just fine on an older memory card reader but with a slower speed.

No if your laptop does have a built in SD-XC compatible memory card reader. SD memory cards with capacity 64 GB+ are SD-XC memory cards while 4GB-32GB capacity cards are considered SD-HC and 2GB-smaller are considered standard SD cards. This Sony UHS II reader supports SD-XC cards and is backward compatible with SD-HC and SD cards. If your laptop has a built in SD card reader check the owner's manual for the specifications of the SD card reader installed regarding SD capacity compatibility.
