How do memory card readers work?
Cameras and other recording devices use memory cards because, unlike built-in storage systems, a full memory card can be swapped with an empty one when you need more space to continue shooting pictures or recording. Then, with a memory card reader, you can upload your content to a device with photo, music or video editing programs directly from the memory card without having to hook up your camera or audio recording device to the computer.
Memory cards range from about the size of a matchbook (compact flash cards) to something smaller than a fingerprint (microSD cards). Some computers have built-in card readers, but many do not or do not cover all sizes. So, that’s where a portable memory card reader comes in. It can provide the appropriate slot for your card and hook up to your computer via USB.
Finding the best memory card reader for you.
When looking for the best memory card reader for you, assess the type(s) of memory card you will be using. Not every card reader accommodates all cards. An SD reader will not fit a compact flash card and may not double as a micro-SD card reader without the appropriate adaptor.
Additionally, you will want to pay attention to the kinds of USB ports available on your laptop or desktop computer. Some USB designs boast very high-speed transfer rates, but they won’t do you any good if you don’t have the right port on your computer.
Choosing a memory card reader is usually one of the initial steps when you start learning about photography or video or audio recording. Once you’re done choosing a camera or recording device, you will want to stock up on memory cards and get the right memory card reader.
