You don't need the app if you don't want it, but I use it with mine to adjust the noise cancelling as I move around and other things.

The app is nicely made and is good for fine tuning the noise cancellation and for understanding which Bluetooth protocol is being used. But if you don't care about those things, you'll be just fine.
