To play single player you need 1 Nintendo Switch, 1 copy of the game and either 2Joy cons or 1 pro controller.

To play multi player, EACH PLAYER needs their own Switch, their own copy of the game, and either 2 joy cons or 1pro controller.

You need to use both Joy Cons to play Splatoon per player. Alternatively, you could use a Nintendo pro controller. 

Multiplayer requires having multiple Switches, as the game does not have split screen support.

Only one controller can be used on the system. You can play online with different systems. No local multiplayer.

All you need is the two Joycon Controllers included with the console. I do not know about multiplayer.

Single player can be done with either the 2 joy cons which come with the system OR a pro controller. 

There is no local multilayer in the game to my knowledge. If you want to play with someone, they need their own switch and copy of the game.
