“On a D80 and D90, the camera top status LCD illuminates when the flash is turned on. Pressing any other button on the camera then will cause the camera top LCD to illuminate...until a flash picture is taken, when the LCD stops doing this. Normal?”

Yes, that’s normal. If you want the flash’s LCD to remain on, press the button that looks like a lightbulb on the lefthand side of the unit.
