You can definitely play this game by yourself. The games are 4 player games but if you don't have 4 people to play with, virtual computer players will play and fill in. You can also play online with others if you have a Nintendo Online account that is currently active (it runs $20/year for a single profile or $35/year for a family of up to 8 and both subscriptions come with some retro Nintendo games).
