Hello Angie, Thank you for reaching out to us with your question. No, an internet connection is not required for the cameras to record directly onto the hard drive. Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Hi Angie. If you wish to view your system on a phone app or update its firmware then the NVR unit requires an internet connection. To achieve this you simply run the included network cable from the back of the NVR to your internet router. If you don't need or want to view your system on your phone then it can also operate without an internet connection. In this case the cameras would simply record to the hard drive inside the NVR box and you would need to connect a monitor to the NVR in order to playback the clips. -SD, Swann team
