• Hi Goat. You will need to connect a monitor to the DVR for the initial setup and installation process as all of the more advanced settings are accessed via the DVR's menu. Any PC monitor or TV screen will be OK for this purpose, they just need to have an HDMI or VGA input. However once you've installed the system and are happy with how it is setup, from then on you won't need a screen connected, you can view your cameras, clips etc from the smartphone app. -SD, Swann Team
