The Tablo device streams and records OTA and internet channels through the free Tablo app. Most Smart TVs are not able to directly download the app, so a separate device like a FireTV stick is needed to use the Tablo with a SmartTV. The Tablo app is also available for IOS and Android devices

Absolutely will work with a smart tv all you need is either a Roku, fire tv box ,hooked up to a empty hdmi port  on your tv or if they are built in that’s cool to just download the Tablo’s app

No, in fact you need a smart TV to download and use the Tablo app with the hardware. What they are saying is that the Tablo does not have the ability to itself load other apps.

It works as a OTA tuner and DVR. You access it thru the Tablo app. I am currently using a Fire stick on a Samsung smart TV. Depending on your smart TV, you may not be able to download the app. You cannot record anything but over-the-air programs.
