“The remote seems to operate when it is directly in front of the TV. Other TVs are more forgiving and can operate at any angle within the room. This is annoying when sitting in a side chair not in front of the TV. Is there a fix for this?”

In addition to the remote that comes with the TV, you can download the free Roku mobile app on your Smartphone or tablet to use as a remote.
