Yes, but you have to be right on top of it for it to work. Seems if anything is on top of the item or in a drawer etc, forgetaboutit.

The slim is about the thickness of 2.5 credit/debit cards and is slightly wider than a card. It fits in my dads. So depending on how full your son keeps his wallet yes.
