“The TV had sound during the on screen setup but now that we have it set to HDMI1 to watch cable TV - there is no sound. Using the volume and mute buttons does nothing but show us what is NOT happening. Could the HDMI cable be bad?”

It is Possible, make sure the HDMI cable pluged in all the way in.( unplug it and replug it in all the way in both sides) if still have an issue, change it to HDMI2. by the way the best quality HDMI cable make sure it is gold and 4k the quality of the resolution it is way much sharper and better than standard HDMI cable.
