I'm guessing you have a Smart TV. I hate that they made the remotes so OVER simplified. I can't even figure out how to turn on and off CC. If its a standard tv (which I'm guessing) not, you simply press the input button and choose the HDMI port you are using. I re-read your question and my initial comment may be irrelevant. If the Toshiba remote is the one that came with it, you should be able to program the remote and tv to synch.
