4k is a higher, and theoretically better, resolution than 1080. HOWEVER, for a TV of only 55 inch the human eye cannot perceive the difference between the two, unless you sat ridiculously close to the screen. 4k becomes somewhat useful on TVs 70 inches and up.

In this size of TV the extra resolution won't make a great deal of difference. More importantly the lower end 4K TVs have made the price on these higher quality 1080P TVs drop greatly. I paid 2X this for an "ok" 55" 4K and the picture quality is better on this unit. This is a great deal.

If its not getting a 4K signal it won't broadcast in 4K. Netflix has a 4K option but you have to select 4 devices to benefit from it and see the difference
