To do this you would have to first format it on your iMac, and partition it to have one for the mac and one for the PC. Here is a link to help you achieve what you want. http://www.pcworld.com/article/250431/how_to_share_an_external_drive_between_a_mac_and_a_pc.html

First you have to decide whether you want all your files to be Readable and writeable (meaning copy/paste/edit/delete. etc.) on your mac and your dell (or any other hp device). If you want some files to be Mac only and others MAC/PC. The steps you would need to take are a bit more complicated. For simplicity's sake I will provide only the steps for making files readable and writeable on both PCs and Macs. Below are the instructions for partitioning on a Mac: *Before you begin make sure all the files on the hard drive are backed up elsewhere because everything will be erased from the Toshiba during partitioning. 1. open Disk Utility from the prompt or by navigating to /Applications/Utilities. 2. Selec the icon that reads toshiba 1tb 3. Select the Partition icon on the top right. 4. Click the icon that says Partition Layout. This is where you decide what size of the memory you want to assign to be PC/MAC compatible (i.e. if you want the whole thing to be PC/Mac, you will select one partition). 5. Then select MS-DOT (FAT). [Note: There a number of "downsides to using MS-DOT (FAT)", however in the scheme of things FAT is the best option for those who are not too techy and not overly worried about security who own a Mac. Feel free to research NTFS and HFS+; these are the other two options available to you if you have worries about privacy or you want to save files bigger that 4GB. I highly recommend you look up the "downsides of using using MS-DOT (FAT) (I chose to create two partitions on my hard drive to use with each OS, separately, the Mac partition is not viewable to people who use PCs, so added security; but I would only recommend that if you find it to be the best choice for you).] 6. Once you are done with you partitioning, select apply and you are set. Hope you find it helpful.
