“I'm not receiving any prompt to update my controller when I connect to my Xbox via the USB cable. Is this incompatible with Elite Controllers, or is there somewhere in settings I can go to manually initiate the update? Thanks!”

Yes it's compatible with the elite controller go into settings devices and connections then accessories then 3 dots first box press and update make sure the device is connected to your controller when you do this.
