• Yes but it comes with a filter to use, they last up to a month depending on how hard your water is. You can get replacements for fairly cheap as well

• Yes it does. The VEV400 humidifier works by blowing air through a filter which wicks water up from a trough, fed by a water canister. One filter ships with the product, and spares can be purchased on Amazon.
