“What is the status with the quality control issues of this model. It is all over the internet including forums like AVS, that there are multiple issues with this set when it first came out. Have the more recent sets been better?”

Andy I got my 75" P-series about a month ago and I've had zero issues. Honestly, I took a few months to decide on which TV to get and I couldn't be happier with my choice.

One is 4 years old and the other 3 and both still work flawlessly barring a little slowdown of the smart functions. I use a Roku for streaming anyway (as most people should) so it's a non issue. As with most tech, the happy owners are often more quiet than the unhappy ones. The cases of faulty units are few and further between than internet forums would have you believe.
