Hi Prince, There are two switches on the front of the unit to control the heat and flames. They are always accessible and you should not get burned while operating either. The vent on the front does get hot, because it is blowing out hot air, but this should not affect your ability to use the switches. This is a simple plug-in unit, so it does need to be near an outlet. We hope this helps in making your decision!
