This is a 3.5in hdd, whereas for a laptop it would have to be 2.5in. At this point you're better off saving the money for an a solid state drive for what you're proposing.

SATA and ATA are very common. It however, might take some know how on how to activate the drive. Additionally laptops are incrementally more difficult and stringent to work on and include such a device than desktops. Be prepared.
