• I am not that familiar with the Dells. I would pull the old one out and make sure it is a 2.5 inch SATA drive.

• Assuming that the Dell 5000 is a laptop, an easy way to find out is to download a small free program called Crystal Disk Info and then execute it. The program will identify the interface for your internal harddrive in a data block right under the device identification which is in large capital letters and numbers. If the interface is 'serial ATA', then this drive is compatible and will fit.

• Yes it has the SATA interface needed to connect to your son's laptop.

• I have replaced HDDs in Dell Desktops, Laptops, and AIO's...from newer machines to machines 9 years old with no issues. I would recommend updating the BIOS off Dell's support site first, then using a program such as "Active@ Disk Image" to copy all system, utility, Dell Partitions.
