Hi, The WD Easystore portable is a plug 'n' play USB 3.0 ready and USB 2.0 compatible drive; comes with USB 3.0 Type-A Interface. You can use the drive as an external portable storage. But, this can't be used to extend the internal storage to install software for seamless operation. We recommend you to make the space in your laptop by moving some data from laptop to the drive. We suggest to follow the 3-2-1 backup strategy.

You can save data to this drive just like your main drive. What I would recommend is installing new software to this drive. The other option is to move other data to this drive like your documents, pictures, movies and music. Either way it will work fine. Hope this helps.
