Yes, I bought it exclusive to use on my Lenovo Yoga laptop. Though I needed to buy a multi usb hub to use multiple things at once (like a blu ray drive, this hard drive, etc). My laptop only has one USB port so keep that in mind if yours is the same and you need multiple things running at the same time while using the storage drive. However, not sure what you mean what do you need to do to run programs... I just have the programs(run.exe.) installed on my computer and this drive holds all the extra, program saves, etc. Be wary if you don’t have the license for certain programs like Word,Excel,Office licensed to your laptop they won’t run. It’s contained to individual PCs now and the license doesn’t transfer anymore.
