You may either partition the drive into volumes dedicated to specific formats (ie, HFS+ for Mac, NTFS for Windows, ext4 for Linux) OR you may just format the drive as MS-DOS (FAT32 or exFAT) and use it with all three systems. Note that certain naming limitations may exist (certain characters not permitted and length of name) but that's easily worked around.
