• I have backed up photos from my Android phone to a WD external Hard Drive several times in the past and have never had a problem. I had a problem connecting once or twice, but that was a computer problem, it was not a problem with the Ext HD.

• Yes, you can use any hard drive to back up your phone, you just can't plug this into your phone it must be used with a computer.
