I have tried a million times to use this drive with my Time Machine by connecting it to AirPort Extreme. I have lost count how many times and how many formats I've used. The only format, despite Apple's claims, is Mac OS Extended..... AFST, FAT do not work. Once the drive was connected and selected as backup drive, Time Machine starts backup process. However, within a few minutes, the process stops because the drive is unavailable.
