There is a software app on the drive to get it to talk with your Mac. I am using it for time machine backups on my iMac. The one thing I have noticed is that periodically the computer will not automatically back up to the drive. The drive is there but somehow time machine backup doesn't see it. I click on the drive and the app that allows the drive and computer to communicate and then it works again.

If you plan to "Share" between a Mac and a PC, then you should probably format to exFat. If you don't plan on having to "share" data between the two, you can format it to the default OS format that your current Mac OS supports. This particular drive is formatted NTFS, you Mac should recognize it, however, it will not be able to write or delete files.
