• I don't remember if it came on the drive or dowload from web site but there is a WD version of Acronis backup software free for use with the drive, you can set this up to schedule backups at regulars intervals ...

• You would need to format your external first. If you make the external the primary area to save new files (in this case docs and pics) then it would automatically save to your drive.
