Hi Ron, Please let us confirm that the My Cloud Home requires an internet connection to authenticate the account. As this device gives access to the user to their individual account so that no one can interfere with another user's data and privacy can be maintained. The backend network mycloud.com can be seen as a proxy network. All security-relevant authentications are done here. After passing the initial authentication, the connection to your individual device is managed by an encrypted VPN tunnel, for security reasons. Need Help? Please see our "'Contact Us" page for information.

You can access your drive through the Internet, but if the Internet is down, you can still access your device through your local network. To make it more simple, when using the WD Discovery Software (free), a virtual drive (Z:\) is set up allowing you to see your data. You also have access to your data via a USB 3.0 drive port located in the rear of your device.
