DVR expander sounds just like a generic term for something to expand your DVR with. This particular one is a two terabyte drive and that's what they recommend... and that's what I use, most work just fine! Occasionally I run into one that has a problem but most the time these type of drives are just fine I've used almost a dozen now external 2 terabyte hard drives some with power and some without...this particular Drive is the first one I've had a glitch on some of the videos I transfered. Hopefully I can reformat it again and that will solve it!

I am sure you will have to reformat the drive to use as a DVR. Tech Support will be able to tell you which drives will work and how to format it for your situation. Good luck.
