“Can I download microSD cards directly (w/ adapter) without using any apps, smart phone, computer? Ie just plug in the card. Also how long does it typically hold a charge? I'm moving video (gopro) to it in remote locations so I can reuse the microSD”

No you can’t. It is powered via usb when plugged in to your laptop.
