“On the box of WD My Passport 5TG external hard drive, it says “download and install driver”. I only need to “drag and drop” folders and files. Is installing the driver (software) optional or required? Can this 5TB hard drive be used on Windows 7?”

No need to download driver. As you said drag and drop, not much easier than that. Not sure about use on Windows 7, it worked on my computer that was Windows 10.
