• The USB connector should work with your laptop. You can basically treat it as another disk drive for your computer and put any files you like on it. You don't place the drive in the cloud. Cloud storage is off-site at a storage provider through (via) the internet.

• Yes, this device comes with software that allows you to backup all files on any computer (laptop or desktop). You can either manually backup files, or set up a schedule to backup your files. You don't have to use a Cloud service - you can backup files directly to the hard drive (as along as they don't exceed the max storage capacity). The device also comes with a User Manual in PDF format that walks you through the process of backing up files.
